About this place
Anheung Catholic Church is a parish in the Hoengseong District of the Diocese of Wonju, serving most of Anheung-myeon and Gangnim-myeon in Hoengseong County. The Catholic Church in Korea directory lists Saint Andrew Kim Tae-gon as its patron and excludes Sosa-ri and Seongsan-ri from its territory in Anheung-myeon. It is the local parish where Catholics in the mountainous Anheung and Gangnim area form a community centered on Mass and the sacraments.
The Catholic community of Anheung existed for many years as a mission station under neighboring parishes before becoming an independent parish. The present Anheung Parish therefore represents the formation of a distinct parish community upon an older mission-station tradition and shows how Catholic life in eastern Hoengseong became established at the local level. Visitors can understand the site not merely as a church building, but as the parish center responsible for the Catholic life of the Anheung and Gangnim area.
History & origins
The Catholic community in Anheung can be documented from its mission-station period, long before the establishment of an independent parish. According to the history of Hoengseong Parish in the Catholic Encyclopedia of Korea, a mission hall was built and blessed at Anheung, together with one at Jeonggeum, in the mid-1950s while the Hoengseong church was being restored after the Korean War. This shows that an organized Catholic community and a basic mission structure were already present in Anheung.
In February 1994, when Dunnae Mission Station was elevated and Dunnae Parish was established, Anheung-myeon and Gangnim-myeon, together with the Anheung and Gangnim mission stations, were transferred from Hoengseong Parish to the new Dunnae Parish. The Anheung community then continued its Catholic life as a mission station under Dunnae’s pastoral care.
The Diocese of Wonju established Anheung Parish on September 3, 2010, assigning it to the Hoengseong District. Most of Anheung-myeon and Gangnim-myeon became the territory of the new parish, giving the long-standing mission community its own parish structure. The sequence from the mission facilities of the 1950s, through the jurisdictional change of the 1990s, to parish establishment in 2010 shows the gradual development of a stable Catholic pastoral base in Anheung.
