About this place

Unjeong Catholic Church is a parish of District 8 of the Diocese of Uijeongbu at 72 Unjeongbeolpan-gil in Paju. It was established on February 19, 2004, after separating from Tanhyeon Parish, and has St. Francis of Assisi as its patron.

As Unjeong New Town developed, the parish provided Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life for a rapidly growing Catholic population. It also became an important mother parish as neighboring communities such as Gyoha, Yadang, and Mokdong-dong later developed into separate parishes.

History & origins

Unjeong Parish was established on February 19, 2004, after separation from Tanhyeon Parish. Its first pastor arrived in March, the community celebrated its first Mass in Sangjiseok-ri, and a tent church was soon prepared for regular worship.

In 2005 the parish celebrated its first Mass in a church at Dayul-ri, followed by dedication in 2006. As the new town developed and parish boundaries changed, the community later moved back toward its present Sangjiseok-ri site, where the current church was dedicated in May 2010. Yadang Parish separated around the same period, and other new communities such as Mokdong-dong followed later.
