About this place

Tapri Mission Station of Uiseong Catholic Church belongs to Uiseong Parish in the Diocese of Andong. It is a local Catholic community through which people living mainly in Geumseong-myeon, Uiseong County, remain connected with the parish through Mass and shared faith life. The Diocese of Andong's mission-station interviews show that Tapri has long been sustained by the participation of local Catholics and that its pastoral council and devotional groups continue to form part of community life. Recent diocesan parish notices also list Mass at Tapri and meetings of the mission pastoral council, confirming that it is not merely a preserved former chapel but a living community within the pastoral care of Uiseong Parish.

The name Tapri is connected with the local place name associated with the nearby Five-story Stone Pagoda of Tap-ri. Within this local setting the mission station has served as a nearby gathering point for Catholics. It allows them to build community without always traveling to the parish church and to continue their faith through Mass celebrated by parish priests, lay service, and local pastoral activity. A visitor can therefore understand Tapri Mission Station not simply as a small church building but as a Catholic space close to everyday life that links the Geumseong community with Uiseong Parish.

History & origins

The Catholic community in Tapri began to take concrete form through a small series of encounters in the 1960s. According to testimony collected by the Diocese of Andong, Sophia Lee Yu-jeong, who had been baptized at Geojin Mission Station in Gangwon Province, came to the area in 1963 for rural technical education. Looking for fellow Catholics, she met Agnes Shin, and the two walked to Uiseong Parish to attend Mass. After Lee settled in the area, four Catholics joined together, rented a room, and in 1965 began the first regular mission-station prayers there.

As the community became established, it secured a more permanent space. The diocesan record says that in 1973 the mission station was formally established, a building was purchased and repaired, and the community dedicated it for Catholic use. Tapri was thus developing from a small gathering of several households into a local community where catechesis and liturgical life could continue. As the number of Catholics increased, the existing space became inadequate, and by the mid-1980s the need for a new mission building was recognized. The community obtained a new site and worked together to make the project possible. The memory of moving from older mission spaces to a new site also shows how the community gradually secured a lasting place for Catholic life in the area.

In 1986 a new mission building was completed on the present site and blessed on 30 November. This marked the transition from the early years of home gatherings and rented rooms to a stable local Catholic space. Although rural population and Catholic numbers later changed, Tapri continued its community life in connection with Uiseong Parish. Its history can therefore be traced from the meeting of a few Catholics and long walks to Mass, through prayer in a rented room and the acquisition of a dedicated site, to the construction of a permanent mission station—an example of local Catholics creating and sustaining a place of faith close to their daily lives.
