용현동 성당

History & origins

Yonghyeon-dong Parish was established on February 23, 1996. Its first pastor arrived in March as the new community was separated from Uijeongbu 2-dong Parish. Early Masses were celebrated in temporary places including an apartment shopping area and a chapel at Camp Indian. On March 16, “Mother of Peace” was chosen as the parish patronal title.

Construction of a permanent church began in March 1997. The church and rectory were completed in September, the first Mass followed in October, and Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan dedicated the church on November 16. As the surrounding population expanded, several new parishes—including Cheonghak, Songsan, and Millak-dong—were later separated from Yonghyeon-dong.
