About this place
Yonghyeon-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Uijeongbu at 23 Yongmin-ro 21beon-gil in Uijeongbu. It was established in 1996 after separating from Uijeongbu 2-dong Parish, and its patronal title is Our Lady, Mother of Peace.
The parish serves local Catholics through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. As the area grew, new parishes such as Cheonghak, Songsan, and Millak-dong emerged from its territory, giving Yonghyeon-dong an important role as a mother parish in the eastern part of Uijeongbu. Devotion to the Mother of Peace is a defining element of its spiritual identity.
History & origins
Yonghyeon-dong Parish was established on February 23, 1996. Its first pastor arrived in March as the new community was separated from Uijeongbu 2-dong Parish. Early Masses were celebrated in temporary places including an apartment shopping area and a chapel at Camp Indian. On March 16, “Mother of Peace” was chosen as the parish patronal title.
Construction of a permanent church began in March 1997. The church and rectory were completed in September, the first Mass followed in October, and Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan dedicated the church on November 16. As the surrounding population expanded, several new parishes—including Cheonghak, Songsan, and Millak-dong—were later separated from Yonghyeon-dong.
