Uijeongbu Cathedral is the cathedral church of the Diocese of Uijeongbu, located at 27 Sinheung-ro 265beon-gil in Uijeongbu. Its patronal title is the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and it became the cathedral when the Diocese of Uijeongbu was created from the Archdiocese of Seoul in 2004.
The parish preserves one of the oldest Catholic traditions in northern Gyeonggi and has served as a mother parish for communities including Dongducheon, Uijeongbu 1-dong, Yonghyeon-dong, Howon-dong, and Singok 1-dong. The site contains both the historic stone church completed in 1953 and the larger church dedicated in 2003, combining the region's postwar Catholic heritage with its present diocesan role.
History & origins
The direct predecessor of today's Uijeongbu Cathedral was Deokjeong-ri Parish. In December 1945 the parish moved from Deokjeong-ri to Uijeongbu and became Uijeongbu Parish. After its temporary church was lost during the Korean War, the present historic stone church was completed and dedicated in 1953.
When Uijeongbu 4-dong Parish separated in 1980, the older parish was renamed Uijeongbu 2-dong. A new main church was dedicated in 2003. With the creation of the Diocese of Uijeongbu in June 2004, the parish became Uijeongbu Cathedral, marking its transition from an old regional mother parish to the central church of a new diocese.
