History & origins

The Sisters of Our Lady of Perpetual Help were founded on June 27, 1932, at Sangsu-guri in Pyongyang by Bishop John Edward Morris, the second bishop of Pyongyang. In 1950 the convent was requisitioned by the North Korean authorities and the community was temporarily dispersed. Sisters who came south re-established the motherhouse in Busan in 1951, later moving it to Heukseok-dong in Seoul in 1955 and to Jeongneung in 1964.

The congregation subsequently expanded into parish, biblical, social, and overseas ministries. Today an Uijeongbu branch is registered at the same address as Madu-dong Parish. The public congregation history and Church directory do not, however, establish the exact opening date of this particular Madu-dong branch. The 1932 foundation of the congregation must therefore be distinguished from the local history of the Uijeongbu house.
