The Ilsan community of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception is a women's religious community at 14-8 Supsongmaeul-ro in Ilsandong-gu, Goyang. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea registers it as the congregation's “Ilsan community” within the Diocese of Uijeongbu.
Following the vision of their foundress, St. Carmen Sallés, the sisters emphasize education as a means of promoting the integral growth of children and young people and proclaiming the Gospel. The Ilsan house is therefore a local religious community for communal life and educational missionary service, not an ordinary territorial parish.
History & origins
The Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception were founded by Carmen Sallés in Burgos, Spain, on December 7, 1892, with a mission centered on the Christian education and integral growth of children and young people. The congregation entered Korea on April 12, 1984, when three sisters arrived.
Its first Korean community was established in Bulgwang-dong in 1985, where the sisters began educational ministry including early-childhood education. The congregation later expanded to other areas, and an Ilsan community is now registered in Goyang. The opening date of this particular community is not publicly documented, so 1892 and 1984 should be understood as the congregation's founding and Korean arrival, not the foundation date of the Ilsan house.
