Wondang Catholic Church is a parish of District 5 of the Diocese of Uijeongbu at 68 Goyang-daero 1369beon-gil in Deogyang-gu, Goyang. It was established on September 9, 1988, and has the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph as its patronal title.
For decades the parish has provided Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life in the Wondang area. As the Catholic population grew, new communities such as Hwajeong and Jichuk developed from its territory, giving Wondang an important role as a mother parish in eastern Goyang.
History & origins
The Wondang Catholic community traces its origins to the first Mass of Wondang Mission Station in January 1986. In 1987 the community purchased the present church site and moved the mission there. Wondang Parish was formally established on September 9, 1988, with the arrival of its first pastor.
As the parish grew, Hwajeong Parish separated in 1996. Construction of a new church began in 2000, and Archbishop Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk dedicated the completed church on November 4, 2001. Jichuk Mission Station later developed into a separate parish in 2010, continuing Wondang's role as a mother parish for the surrounding area.
