Uijeongbu 1-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Uijeongbu at 30 Ganeung-ro 135beon-gil in Uijeongbu. It began in 1980 after separation from Uijeongbu Parish under the name “Uijeongbu 4-dong Parish,” with Pentecost as its patronal title. It was renamed Uijeongbu 1-dong Parish in 1999.
The parish serves Catholics in the Ganeung and central Uijeongbu area through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. As the local Catholic population grew, it also became a mother parish for new communities including Nogyang-dong and Singok 2-dong.
History & origins
The history of Uijeongbu 1-dong Parish began in earnest with the purchase of land in September 1980 and the establishment of “Uijeongbu 4-dong Parish” on October 4. Fr. James Jo Won-haeng arrived as first pastor, and Pentecost was adopted as the patronal title. This separation led the older Uijeongbu Parish to be renamed Uijeongbu 2-dong Parish.
As the community grew, Nogyang-dong Parish separated in 1992 and Singok 2-dong in 1997. On March 2, 1999, the parish was renamed Uijeongbu 1-dong, the name it continues to use today.
