About this place
Toegyewon Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Uijeongbu at 35 Toegyewon-ro 59beon-gil in Toegyewon-eup, Namyangju. Its patrons are the 103 Korean Martyrs, and the parish serves local Catholics through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.
The community grew from a mission-station tradition dating to the 1960s. By honoring the 103 Korean Martyrs, the parish emphasizes the faith of Korea's early lay-led Church and its martyrs. In 2026 the community is commemorating forty years from the stage when it separated from its mother parish.
History & origins
The roots of the Toegyewon Catholic community reach back to 1962, when it developed within the Sinnae-dong mission under Imun-dong Parish. It was recognized as Toegyewon Mission Station under Sangbong-dong Parish in 1970, and a mission building was obtained in 1973. Construction on the present church site began in 1985; the community separated from Sangbong-dong on February 6, 1986, and the new church building was completed that October.
The parish's official chronology records February 6, 1987, as the elevation to parish status, followed by the church dedication by Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan on October 24. The 1986 separation and construction and the 1987 parish elevation and dedication should therefore be kept distinct.
