About this place

This location is the Imjingak branch of the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary together with Fatima Peace Church at 100 Majeong-ro in Munsan-eup, Paju. Near the Imjingak and the inter-Korean border, it was developed as a place of prayer for reconciliation and peace on the Korean Peninsula, with the sisters serving alongside the church.

Its spirituality is closely connected with the Fatima message and devotion to the Immaculate Heart of Mary, and the site hosts Mass, prayer, and retreat activities. It is best understood as a religious-community branch joined to a church dedicated to prayer for peace, rather than an ordinary territorial parish.

History & origins

The plan for Fatima Peace Church began in 1982, when the Korean World Apostolate of Fatima discussed building a church near Imjingak to pray for conversion, reconciliation, and peaceful reunification. About 10,000 pyeong of land in Majeong-ri was donated in November 1987, but military restrictions delayed construction for many years.

After a long period of preparation, Bishop Peter Lee Ki-heon dedicated Fatima Peace Church on May 6, 2015, with the Sisters of the Immaculate Heart of Mary participating in the apostolate together with the Korean World Apostolate of Fatima. The congregation itself was founded on March 25, 1986, but the exact opening date of the Imjingak branch is not separately documented, so it is not equated with the 2015 church dedication.
