The Uijeongbu district community of the Seoul Province of the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres is a women's religious community registered at 284 Hyeeum-ro in Deogyang-gu, Goyang. The same address is home to Aedeok House, a residential rehabilitation facility for people with intellectual disabilities, and the Catholic Church Directory in Korea identifies the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres as the religious congregation responsible for that institution.

History & origins

The Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres originated in France in 1696, and their mission in Korea began after Bishop Blanc, Vicar Apostolic of Korea, requested sisters for the Korean Church. According to the congregation's official history, four missionary sisters arrived at Jemulpo on July 22, 1888, and began apostolic work including care for orphans. Their ministries later expanded across the Korean Church into education, health care, social welfare, and parish service.

Today the congregation's Seoul Province has an “Uijeongbu district” community registered at 284 Hyeeum-ro in Goyang, where the sisters are also identified as the congregation responsible for Aedeok House. Public official sources do not state exactly when this local community was opened. The 1888 arrival in Korea must therefore be distinguished from the still-undocumented opening date of the Goyang community.
