About this place
Songchu Catholic Church is a parish of District 3 of the Diocese of Uijeongbu in Jangheung-myeon, Yangju. As of 2026, the official parish website names St. John Nam Jong-sam as patron, and the parish is closely connected with pilgrimage ministry to the nearby graves of St. Nam and his family and of Alexius Hwang Sa-yeong.
A new church replaced the old building and was dedicated on May 3, 2026. Older material names St. Francis of Assisi as patron, indicating a later change, although the exact date of that change has not been verified.
History & origins
The Songchu community grew from a mission station into a parish; a 2021 published account records its elevation to parish status on August 22, 2013. In 2018 Songchu Parish was designated as the pilgrimage base for the graves of St. John Nam Jong-sam and his family and for the grave of Alexius Hwang Sa-yeong.
During the rebuilding project in 2025, the old church was demolished and Masses were celebrated temporarily at the Hwang Sa-yeong pilgrimage memorial hall. The new church was completed on April 29, 2026, and dedicated on May 3.
