성 남종삼 요한과 가족 순교자 묘소

Shrine

About this place

The graves of St. John Nam Jong-sam and his martyred family form a diocesan historic pilgrimage site in the Uiryeong Nam family cemetery at San 22-2, Uldae-ri, Yangju. The site contains the graves of St. John Nam Jong-sam, his father Augustine Nam Sang-gyo, his wife Philomena Yi Joi, and his youngest son Nam Gyu-hui, and is registered under the diocesan committee for the veneration of martyrs.

Its importance lies in preserving the witness of an entire family that kept the faith under persecution, not merely the grave of one saint. It is visited in connection with Songchu Parish as a place to contemplate St. Nam's martyrdom and his family's sacrifice.

History & origins

St. John Nam Jong-sam was martyred outside Seosomun Gate during the Byeongin Persecution of 1866. His remains were later transferred several times, and part of his relics was placed in the family cemetery at Uldae-ri. His father Augustine Nam Sang-gyo and his wife Philomena Yi Joi also died amid the persecution, making the family's witness the central historical background of the site.

An interpretive marker was installed in 2004 as part of efforts to preserve the graves. In 2010 the Diocese of Uijeongbu developed the 'Way of the Martyrs' through the area. In 2018 Songchu Parish was designated as the pilgrimage base for these graves and the grave of Alexius Hwang Sa-yeong, and a new gravestone for St. Nam was unveiled.
