About this place

St. Joseph's Benedictine Monastery is a men's Benedictine monastery at 105-75 Buramsan-ro in Byeollae-dong, Namyangju. It was established on March 19, 1987, and became an autonomous monastery independent from Waegwan Abbey on March 19, 2014.

A retreat and prayer house under the monastery's responsibility is registered at the same address. The site is therefore both the home of a monastic community and a spiritual place where lay Catholics can encounter Benedictine prayer and retreat.

History & origins

The Benedictine tradition in Korea began with the arrival of monks in 1909, and St. Joseph's Monastery was established within that history on March 19, 1987. The community grew in connection with Waegwan Abbey.

On March 19, 2014, it became an autonomous monastery independent from Waegwan. This was a major transition in the development of the Byeollae community, which today continues both monastic life and retreat ministry.
