About this place
Pyeongnae Catholic Church is the district-head parish of District 1 of the Diocese of Uijeongbu, located at 17 Gyeongchun-ro 1256beon-gil in Namyangju. Its patronal title is the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, and it serves Catholics in the Pyeongnae area through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and parish life.
The community grew from a mission station of Maseok Parish and later became independent. Today it also serves as a central parish of District 1, combining devotion to the Holy Family with a coordinating role among nearby parishes in eastern Namyangju.
History & origins
The Pyeongnae community began in December 1985 as a mission station of Maseok Parish. The present site was purchased in 1988, and Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan dedicated the church in June 1989. In August 1990 the mission was elevated to an independent parish.
There is a date difference between official sources. The Catholic Church Directory gives August 22, 1990, as the establishment date, while the parish's own chronology records August 31 as the elevation from mission station to parish. Hopyeong-dong Parish later separated in 2001, and Pyeongnae became part of the newly established Diocese of Uijeongbu in 2004.
