About this place

Okjeong Catholic Church is a parish of District 4 of the Diocese of Uijeongbu at 28 Okjeongdong-ro 8-gil in Yangju. The community was formed in 2020 as Okjeong New Town grew, drawing territory from neighboring parishes including Deokjeong and Yangju 2-dong. Its patron is St. Susanna U Sur-im, one of the 103 Korean Martyrs.

The parish serves a rapidly growing new-town population through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. Its identity combines devotion to a Korean martyr with the task of building a stable Catholic community in a newly developed urban district.

History & origins

The creation of Okjeong Parish began with a decision on February 6, 2020, to separate the new community from existing parishes. Its first pastor arrived on February 18, and parish records were transferred in March. Despite restrictions during the COVID-19 period, the community celebrated its first Mass on site on May 3.

In its early years, the parish used a tent and borrowed facilities for worship. Construction of an education building began in late 2022, and the completed building came into use for Mass in May 2023. The early history of Okjeong is therefore the story of a new-town parish moving from temporary worship spaces toward a stable pastoral center.
