Munsan Catholic Church is a parish of District 8 of the Diocese of Uijeongbu, located at 38 Munhyang-ro 67beon-gil in Munsan-eup, Paju. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records the parish as established on February 10, 1973, with Mary, Queen of Peace, as its patron.
Because it is located in a border region close to the Demilitarized Zone, Munsan Parish has long carried a symbolic vocation of prayer for peace alongside its ordinary parish ministry of Mass and the sacraments. Its patronal devotion to the Queen of Peace is closely connected with this local reality and remains an important part of the parish's identity.
History & origins
The organized Catholic community in Munsan took shape in October 1962, when Ilsan Parish established Munsan Mission Station. As the population of the military and border area grew, the Catholic community also expanded, with assistance from military chaplains during its early development.
As the mission grew, the Archdiocese of Seoul established Munsan Parish on February 10, 1973, and Fr. Lee Jong-hyo became its first pastor. The parish subsequently developed as a Catholic community in the northern border region of Gyeonggi, and in 2023 it marked its fiftieth anniversary by reflecting on its history and its vocation to peace.
