The Reconciliation Center is a retreat and prayer facility of the Diocese of Uijeongbu at 111 Seongdong-ro, Tanhyeon-myeon, Paju. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea classifies it as a diocesan “retreat/prayer house.” Together with the Church of Repentance and Atonement on the same site, it serves as a pastoral center for prayer and work toward reconciliation and peace on the Korean Peninsula.
Its architecture also expresses that purpose. Diocesan material explains that the center was modeled on the former Maryknoll mission headquarters at Seopo outside Pyongyang and that works by artists from both South and North Korea were placed inside to symbolize unity and reconciliation. The center is therefore best understood not merely as an annex to a parish church, but as a specialized space for prayer, education, formation, and peace ministry.
History & origins
The Reconciliation Center and the Church of Repentance and Atonement grew from a Church initiative to create a place that would remember the wounds of national division and foster prayer for reconciliation and reunification. A groundbreaking Mass and ceremony for the complex took place in April 2006, and the church building was completed in 2008.
In January 2013, by agreement between the Archdiocese of Seoul and the Diocese of Uijeongbu, ownership and management of both the church and the Reconciliation Center were transferred to Uijeongbu. The church was dedicated in June 2013, and the Reconciliation Center itself was dedicated on July 4, 2014. The complex has since developed into one of the diocese's principal spaces for prayer, education, pilgrimage, and peace ministry concerning reconciliation on the Korean Peninsula.
