History & origins

Although Majae is connected with the faith history of the Jeong brothers and the family of Augustine Jeong Yak-jong from the early period of Korean Catholicism, the present shrine complex was developed mainly in the 2000s. The Diocese of Uijeongbu assigned a priest to the project in 2006, acquired the present site in 2007, and developed facilities including a traditional-style Thomas chapel. A shrine blessing was celebrated on September 28, 2008.

Majae Shrine Parish was established in 2012, and the 2014 beatification of early Korean Catholics including Jeong Yak-jong and Jeong Cheol-sang further highlighted the site's Holy Family character. On May 27, 2017, the site was formally proclaimed and blessed as “Majae Holy Family Shrine.” The 2008 blessing of the shrine facilities and the 2017 Holy Family Shrine proclamation should therefore be understood as distinct stages.
