About this place
Madu-dong Catholic Church is a parish of District 6 of the Diocese of Uijeongbu, located at 254 Ilsan-ro in Ilsandong-gu, Goyang. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records the parish as established on October 5, 2001, with St. Thérèse of the Child Jesus as its patron.
The parish serves Catholics in the Madu-dong area through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. Its official introduction places particular emphasis on St. Thérèse as the community's patron. Devotion to the saint known for the “little way,” together with the parish's formation during the growth of the Ilsan area, shapes its present identity.
History & origins
Madu-dong Parish was created in 2001 as Catholic life expanded in the Ilsan area and territory was separated from Baekseok-dong Parish. Contemporary material records a decision to create the new parish in September 2001, while the Catholic Church Directory in Korea gives October 5 of that year as the formal establishment date. These are best understood as different stages: the decision and the formal establishment.
Soon afterward, Fr. James Kim Gyeong-mo became the first pastor and began his ministry in October 2001. The present parish thus emerged when part of the territory formerly served by Baekseok-dong became an independent Catholic community.
