Religious house
About this place
The Dongducheon community of the Consolata Missionaries is a male missionary religious house at 22-10 Donggwang-ro 40beon-gil in Dongducheon. The current Catholic Church Directory in Korea explicitly lists it under the Diocese of Uijeongbu as the “Dongducheon House / Migrant Ministry” of the Consolata Missionaries (I.M.C.).
Its principal local role is missionary and pastoral care among migrants. Catholic sources on the community describe work with migrant workers facing labor, medical, and daily-life difficulties, as well as pastoral outreach to communities of different languages. The site is therefore best understood not as an ordinary parish church but as a religious house where missionary community life, prayer, and direct migrant ministry meet.
For the Consolata Missionaries, mission itself is central to the congregation's identity, especially living among poor and vulnerable people and proclaiming the Gospel through concrete life. The Dongducheon house is a local expression of that charism in Korea's migrant ministry.
History & origins
The Consolata Missionaries were founded by Father Joseph Allamano in Turin, Italy, on January 29, 1901. The current Catholic Church Directory records the same foundation date and gives January 20, 1988 as the congregation's arrival in Korea. Joseph Allamano, the founder, was canonized by Pope Francis on October 20, 2024.
After arriving in Korea, the missionaries initially concentrated on ministry among the urban poor and later expanded their work among migrants. Catholic media records that a Dongducheon house was opened in Saengyeon-dong in October 2007 specifically for migrant ministry. From there the missionaries assisted migrant workers with unpaid wages, medical care, and daily-life difficulties while also celebrating Mass and visiting different migrant communities.
The history of the Dongducheon house therefore represents the path of a missionary charism founded in 1901, brought to Korea in 1988, and given a concrete local form in migrant ministry from 2007 onward.
