About this place

Junae Mission Station is a Catholic mission community at 33-31 Pabal-ro in Paju-eup, Paju, within District 8 of the Diocese of Uijeongbu and under the pastoral care of Beobwon-ri Parish. It is not an independent parish with a resident priest, but a local community that gathers for scheduled Masses and prayer under its mother parish.

The chapel, built through cooperation between U.S. military chaplains and local Catholics in the 1950s and 1960s, is a surviving witness to the growth of the Church in northern Gyeonggi after the Korean War. Its distinctive altar crucifix, the “Jesus Carrying an A-frame,” evokes both Korean civilian porters who supported wartime troops and Christ carrying the burdens of humanity.

History & origins

According to recent Catholic reporting citing the history of Beobwon-ri Parish, Junae Mission Station was established in 1958. U.S. military chaplains helped secure the site and support construction, while local Catholics contributed labor and community effort. Construction proceeded from the early 1960s, and the chapel was dedicated to the Queen of Korea on December 4, 1965.

Military chaplains initially celebrated Mass for the local faithful, and the mission later continued under Beobwon-ri Parish. Although the community is now small, Junae remains an important witness to postwar Catholic history and cooperation in the northern border region.
