The Uijeongbu branch of the Carmelite Missionaries is a women's religious community at 40 Beolmal-ro 128beon-gil in Guri, the same address as Topyeong-dong Parish. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea registers it as a local house of the congregation within the Diocese of Uijeongbu.
The congregation combines the contemplative tradition of Carmel with the ecclesial spirituality of its founder, Blessed Francisco Palau, living prayer and apostolic service together. In Korea the sisters serve in parish ministry, spiritual formation, and works for people in need; the congregation's official material specifically lists Topyeong-dong Parish among its parish apostolates. The house is therefore a religious community serving in cooperation with the parish, not the parish itself.
History & origins
The Carmelite Missionaries were founded in Spain in 1860–1861 by Discalced Carmelite Fr. Francisco Palau, and their first religious community was established in Ciutadella, Menorca, in 1862. On December 3, 1907, Pope Pius X granted the congregation pontifical recognition.
The sisters entered Korea in 1977 at the invitation of the Discalced Carmelites and subsequently expanded ministries in Carmelite spirituality, parish life, formation, and social service. An Uijeongbu branch is now registered at Topyeong-dong in Guri and participates in parish ministry. The exact opening date of the local branch is not publicly documented, so the congregation's founding and its 1977 arrival in Korea should remain distinct from the local history of the Topyeong house.
