About this place
Jeongok Catholic Church is a parish of District 4 of the Diocese of Uijeongbu at 5 Pyeonghwa-ro 673beon-gil in Jeongok-eup, Yeoncheon County. Centered on Jeongok-eup, it serves Catholics across a broad rural and border-region area through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.
The parish has long functioned as an important pastoral center for Catholic communities in the Yeoncheon area, including communities that later developed into separate parishes. Its present identity is shaped by the task of connecting Catholics scattered across a wide border-region territory.
History & origins
A parish-development committee was organized in Jeongok in 1977. A detailed chronology records that Jeongok Mission Station was elevated and separated as a parish on May 13, 1978, followed by the arrival of the first pastor, Fr. John Kim Jin-ha, that September. Some current directory-style sources, however, give May 31, 1979, as the establishment date, so the exact canonical date differs among the available sources.
The community later built a permanent church, completed and dedicated by Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan on June 22, 1985. In 1992 the Yeoncheon mission community was elevated and separated as a parish. Jeongok's early history is therefore safest understood as a mission community that became an independent parish in the late 1970s and established a permanent church in 1985.
