History & origins

The Catholic community in Jeokseong traces its roots to a mission station formed around Mugeon-ri about 1910. Over the decades it passed under the care of several parent parishes, including Gaeseong, Haengju, Deokjeong, Uijeongbu, Dongducheon, and Beobwon-ri. In 1968 the community secured the present site and built a mission chapel with diocesan help and materials from nearby military units.

The mission was blessed as the Sacred Heart Mission in 1995 and was elevated to Jeokseong Parish on November 29, 1996, when Fr. Andrew Hwang Gyeong-won arrived as first pastor. The church was expanded and renovated in 2003, and in 2004 the parish became part of the newly created Diocese of Uijeongbu. The official overview's 1968 “establishment” date is best understood in the context of the mission station, while parish status dates from the 1996 elevation confirmed by the official chronology and the 2026 thirtieth-anniversary observance.
