History & origins

Jangpa-ri Mission Station traces its beginnings to the period after the Korean War, when three Americans drowned during the reconstruction of Libby Bridge over the Imjin River. The official Jeokseong Parish account says that the military chaplain Fr. Bruno established the mission in memory of their souls. During the 1960s, American relief supplies arriving through military chaplains also brought local residents into closer contact with the Catholic community and encouraged the growth of faith.

In 2005 sisters of the Blessed Sacrament Sisters of Charity were assigned to the mission, established a local convent, and began ministries for children, older residents, and households in need. The history of Jangpa-ri thus developed from wartime memory and borderland experience into a local center of faith and service.
