About this place
Hwajeonmaeul Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Uijeongbu at 88 Jungang-ro 78beonan-gil in Deogyang-gu, Goyang. It was established as a parish on August 28, 2008, and has St. Francis of Assisi as its patron.
The parish serves Catholics in Hwajeon-dong and nearby areas through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. It developed from a mission station under Haengsin 1-dong Parish and later became the mother parish from which Hyangdong Parish separated in 2021.
History & origins
The Hwajeonmaeul community began in May 2008 when parish records for Catholics in Hyangdong-dong and Deogeun-dong were transferred from Susaek Parish and a mission station was formed under Haengsin 1-dong Parish. Mission Mass began in a temporary Hyangdong space on May 14, and groundbreaking took place at the Hwajeon church site on August 19.
Hwajeonmaeul Parish was formally established on August 28, and its first pastor arrived in September. The church was completed and the first Mass celebrated there in December; St. Francis was chosen as patron in 2009. Hyangdong Parish later separated on June 6, 2021.
