About this place

Hugok Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Uijeongbu at 592 Ilsan-ro in Ilsanseo-gu, Goyang. It was established in June 2001, and its patron is St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon, Korea's first priest and martyr.

The parish serves Catholics in the western residential districts of Ilsan through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. It began with Catholics transferred from parts of Daehwa, Juyeop, and Jeongbalsan parishes, reflecting the growth and subdivision of parish life in Ilsan New Town.

History & origins

Hugok Parish began in March 2001 with the purchase of an existing church building at the present site for use by the new Catholic community. In June, portions of Daehwa, Juyeop, and Jeongbalsan parishes were separated to form Hugok, and the parish's own official introduction records June 1 as the establishment date.

At that time the parish still belonged to the Archdiocese of Seoul. Archbishop Nicholas Cheong Jin-suk dedicated the church in July 2001. The rapid conversion of an existing building into a parish church allowed the new community to establish an independent pastoral and liturgical center within a short period.
