About this place
Haengju Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Uijeongbu and a Marian pilgrimage church at 50 Haengjusanseong-ro 144beon-gil in Deogyang-gu, Goyang. It traces its origin to a mission station of Yakhyeon Parish in 1899 and was elevated to parish status in 1909. Its patronal feast is the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
The community preserves the tradition of a hanok-style church first built in 1910. When the church was moved to its present site in 1928, original structural materials were reused. The building was registered as Registered Cultural Property No. 455 in 2010, linking northern Gyeonggi's Catholic history with modern Korean church architecture.
History & origins
The Haengju Catholic community began in 1899 as a mission station of Yakhyeon Parish. It was elevated to parish status in 1909, and a hanok-style church was built in 1910, giving the community a permanent center of worship.
In 1928 the church was moved to its present site with structural materials such as posts and beams reused from the earlier building, and it was expanded in 1949. Its historical and architectural significance led to registration as Registered Cultural Property No. 455 in 2010. After preservation and restoration work, it continues to function as both a parish church and a Marian pilgrimage destination.
