Guri Catholic Church, at 42 Angol-ro 64beon-gil in Guri, is a parish of District 2 of the Diocese of Uijeongbu. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records its establishment on May 9, 1974, with Saint Peter the Apostle as patron.
After growing from the Gyomun-ri mission community into a parish, Guri became an important mother community during the expansion of Catholic life in Guri and Namyangju. Its official chronology records the emergence or separation of a number of surrounding communities, including Maseok, Geumgok, Jigeum, Inchang-dong, and Topyeong-dong.
Guri is therefore both a local parish under the patronage of Saint Peter and a long-standing Catholic center that reflects the growth of the Church alongside the urban development of northeastern Gyeonggi Province.
History & origins
The history of the church building at Guri begins before the parish itself was formally established. The official chronology records that church construction began on June 19, 1973, and that the completed building hosted its first Mass on December 8. On May 9, 1974, the Gyomun-ri mission of Sangbong-dong Parish was elevated to parish status as Guri Parish, and the new church was consecrated on June 1, 1975.
As the community grew, its facilities were expanded more than once. Another church-building project began in 1983 and the community moved into the new church that year. A further building campaign began in the late 1980s, culminating in the dedication of a new church on April 30, 1989.
Guri subsequently became a mother parish for the growth of Catholic communities nearby. Its official history records the creation or separation of Maseok in 1985, Geumgok in 1991, Jigeum-dong in 1995, Inchang-dong in 1996, and Topyeong-dong in 2001.
