About this place
Goyang-dong Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Uijeongbu in District 5, located in Deogyang-gu, Goyang. Its patron is the Ascension of the Lord. The parish serves Goyang-dong, Byeokje-dong, Seonyu-dong, Binjeong-dong, and part of Daeja-dong, organizing local Catholic life through four community groups.
The parish explains the hope and love expressed in Christ's Resurrection and Ascension as a symbolic foundation of its identity. Goyang-dong is therefore both the local parish center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community activities and a faith community that takes the hope of the Lord's Ascension as a defining theme.
History & origins
Goyang-dong Parish was established on February 22, 1994, after being separated from Gupabal Parish, and Fr. Ignatius Oh Seung-won arrived as its first pastor on March 8 of that year. Diocesan approval to purchase the church site was obtained in 1995, and the groundbreaking ceremony and Mass were held on July 3, 1996.
A dedication Mass for the church was celebrated on May 24, 1998. When the Diocese of Uijeongbu was established in June 2004, the parish was transferred from the Archdiocese of Seoul to the new diocese. In April 2009, the Gwan-san-dong and Gwangtan communities separated from Goyang-dong, reflecting later adjustments in parish territory as Catholic communities in the area developed.
