History & origins

The creation of Geumgok as an independent parish was tied to the expansion of Guri Parish. Guri's official chronology records the start of construction at Geumgok on November 1, 1990, followed by the first Mass there on May 19, 1991. It then records the elevation of the Geumgok mission community to a parish on August 23, 1991.

The current Catholic Church Directory lists May 19, 1991 as the parish's establishment date. The official chronology of Guri, its mother parish at the time, however, clearly distinguishes May 19 as the first Mass and August 23 as the formal creation of the parish. The safest historical account is therefore to preserve both stages rather than collapse them into a single date.

This sequence shows the gradual formation of Geumgok Parish through construction of a worship space, the beginning of regular liturgy, and subsequent pastoral independence.
