Geumgok Catholic Church, at 29 Gyeongchun-ro 1015beon-gil in Namyangju, is a parish of District 1 of the Diocese of Uijeongbu. The current Catholic Church Directory names the Sacred Heart of Jesus as its patronal title and confirms the parish at this address.
The Geumgok community grew out of Guri Parish and became an independent parish in 1991. Guri Parish's official chronology records a first Mass at Geumgok on May 19, 1991 and the formal creation of Geumgok Parish from the mission community on August 23. This background places Geumgok within the expansion of Catholic life in the Guri-Namyangju area.
Today Geumgok continues as the local parish community under the patronage of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, serving the liturgical and communal life of Catholics in the Geumgok area.
History & origins
The creation of Geumgok as an independent parish was tied to the expansion of Guri Parish. Guri's official chronology records the start of construction at Geumgok on November 1, 1990, followed by the first Mass there on May 19, 1991. It then records the elevation of the Geumgok mission community to a parish on August 23, 1991.
The current Catholic Church Directory lists May 19, 1991 as the parish's establishment date. The official chronology of Guri, its mother parish at the time, however, clearly distinguishes May 19 as the first Mass and August 23 as the formal creation of the parish. The safest historical account is therefore to preserve both stages rather than collapse them into a single date.
This sequence shows the gradual formation of Geumgok Parish through construction of a worship space, the beginning of regular liturgy, and subsequent pastoral independence.
