About this place
Galgok-ri Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Uijeongbu in Beobwon-eup, Paju, and also a pilgrimage place carrying forward the long Catholic tradition of the Chilul community. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea also lists the site as a pilgrimage place commemorating the martyrs Servant of God Fr. Benedict Kim Chi-ho and Marianna Kim Jeong-suk.
Today Galgok-ri is both a parish for local Catholics and a place that preserves and transmits the memory of a Catholic village whose history reaches back to the late nineteenth century and of people of faith who came from this community.
History & origins
The roots of the Galgok-ri community go back to 1896, when the families of Paul Kim Geun-bae, Francis Kim Yeon-bae, and Peter Park Man-bo moved to and settled in Galgok-ri. In 1898, the name "Chilul" first appeared in the pastoral statistics of Yakhyeon Parish, which recorded an officially established Chilul mission station with 65 Catholics and Paul Kim Geun-bae as its first lay leader.
The community later passed successively under the care of Songdo (Gaeseong), Sinam-ri, Deokjeong, Uijeongbu, and Beobwon-ri parishes. A dedication ceremony for the Galgok-ri mission chapel was held in 1955. It was elevated to quasi-parish status on August 24, 2018, and then to a full parish on February 6, 2025, completing a long development from mission community to independent parish.
