About this place

Dongducheon Catholic Church is a parish of District 4 of the Diocese of Uijeongbu, located at 64 Donggwang-ro in Dongducheon. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records the parish as established on February 24, 1959, and names St. John the Baptist as its patron.

For decades the parish has served local Catholics through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. Its roots in a mission station formerly under Uijeongbu Parish, followed by growth into an independent parish, also reflect the wider development of the Church in northern Gyeonggi Province.

History & origins

The Catholic community of Dongducheon developed first as a mission station under Uijeongbu Parish and was later elevated and separated as an independent parish in 1959. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea gives February 24, 1959, as the formal establishment date.

The creation of the parish marked an important stage in the expansion of the Church in northern Gyeonggi, providing an independent pastoral center for Catholics in Dongducheon. The community subsequently took root as a local parish and continues today within District 4 of the Diocese of Uijeongbu.
