Catholic life in Deokso has roots reaching back to an early twentieth-century mission station, while the present church is a modern building completed in the 2000s. History & origins
The Catholic community in Deokso began in 1904 with the establishment of Deokso Mission Station. The community continued as a mission until it was elevated to parish status in 1989; the Catholic Church Directory in Korea gives February 4, 1989, as the parish establishment date.
As the community later grew, construction of a new church began in 2006 and the present building was completed in 2007. The two major stages—the elevation from mission station to parish and the construction of a new church in the twenty-first century—show how a Catholic community with more than a century of local history expanded both institutionally and physically.
