Deokso Catholic Church is a parish of District 1 of the Diocese of Uijeongbu, located at 88-21 Sure-ro in Wabu-eup, Namyangju. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records the parish as established on February 4, 1989, with the Resurrection of the Lord as its patronal title.
Catholic life in Deokso has roots reaching back to an early twentieth-century mission station, while the present church is a modern building completed in the 2000s. The parish introduction highlights the ceramic-tile mosaic wall behind the sanctuary as a distinctive artistic feature. The combination of a long local Catholic history and a contemporary church building is a defining characteristic of Deokso Parish.
History & origins
The Catholic community in Deokso began in 1904 with the establishment of Deokso Mission Station. The community continued as a mission until it was elevated to parish status in 1989; the Catholic Church Directory in Korea gives February 4, 1989, as the parish establishment date.
As the community later grew, construction of a new church began in 2006 and the present building was completed in 2007. The two major stages—the elevation from mission station to parish and the construction of a new church in the twenty-first century—show how a Catholic community with more than a century of local history expanded both institutionally and physically.
