About this place
Deokgye-dong Catholic Church is a parish of District 4 of the Diocese of Uijeongbu, located at 7 Deokgyeseoan-gil in Yangju. The parish's official history names Our Lady, Star of the Sea, as its patron, and the church continues to serve Catholics of Deokgye-dong and Hoejeong-dong through Mass, the sacraments, and parish community life.
The parish grew out of a mission station formerly under Deokjeong Parish. Its present significance therefore lies in providing a local center of parish ministry close to the faithful of the area, while devotion to Mary under the title Star of the Sea gives the community a distinctive spiritual identity.
History & origins
The Deokgye-dong community began preparing an independent place of worship with the purchase of mission property in July 2001, and Deokgye Mission Station was formally established on October 23, 2003. The community then grew under Deokjeong Parish until plans for an independent parish moved forward.
On August 25, 2011, the mission station received approval to separate and was elevated to parish status. The same day, Our Lady, Star of the Sea, was chosen as patron. Fr. James Kang Jin-gu arrived as the first pastor on September 6, and the parish celebrated its first Mass the following day. The approximately eight-year development from mission station to independent parish forms the core of its early history.
