About this place

Daehwa Village Catholic Church is a parish of District 7 of the Diocese of Uijeongbu, located at 12-14 Daehwa 1-ro in Ilsanseo-gu, Goyang. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records the parish as established on October 11, 2004, with the Holy Family as its patron.

Although its name is similar to nearby Daehwa-dong Parish, it is a separate parish serving Catholics in Daehwa Village and the surrounding area through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. Formed in a newer residential district, it supports the faith life of families and the local community, while its patronage under the Holy Family expresses an important part of its identity.

History & origins

The Catholic community of Daehwa Village can be traced clearly to August 2002, when a neighborhood Mass was celebrated in the newly occupied residential area while it was still under Daehwa-dong Parish. In 2003 Daehwa Village was organized as a distinct pastoral area within the parent parish, and the growth of the new housing district led toward the creation of an independent parish.

In September 2004 Daehwa-dong Parish formally welcomed the newly established Daehwa 2-dong church community. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea gives October 11, 2004, as the establishment date of Daehwa Village Parish. On December 24 of that year, the community entered its new church and celebrated Christmas Mass. The sequence shows how a neighborhood community in a new town quickly developed into an independent parish.
