About this place
Daehwa-dong Catholic Church is a parish of District 7 of the Diocese of Uijeongbu, located at 58 Seongjeo-ro in Ilsanseo-gu, Goyang. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records the parish as established on October 12, 1997, and names the Korean martyr St. Peter Yu Tae-chol as its patron.
The parish is a center for Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life for Catholics in the Daehwa-dong area. Its education building is also named Yu Tae-chol Hall in honor of the patron saint. Devotion to a Korean martyr and its role as a local parish formed during the growth of western Ilsan are central to the church's present identity.
History & origins
Daehwa-dong Parish received approval in August 1997 to separate from Juyeop Parish. It began parish life with its first Mass on October 12 of that year, and the church was consecrated on December 7 by Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan.
As the community grew, an education building was blessed in 1999 and named Yu Tae-chol Hall after the patron saint. In 2001 the Hugok area was separated to form Hugok Parish, and in 2004 the newly developed Daehwa Village community was likewise established as a separate parish. After the Diocese of Uijeongbu was created in 2004, Daehwa-dong continued within the new diocese. These separations reflect the expansion of Catholic life in western Ilsan.
