Daegwang-ri Mission Station is a Catholic mission community at 1186 Yeonsin-ro, Sinseo-myeon, Yeoncheon County, in the Diocese of Uijeongbu. The current Catholic Church Directory in Korea confirms the same name and address, while Sangri Parish describes it as a mission station near the western slope of Godaesan, about seven kilometers from the parish church and among the northernmost Catholic communities in Gyeonggi Province.
Daegwang-ri is not an independent parish. It is a local community under the pastoral care of Sangri Parish where Catholics in the Sinseo-myeon area gather for prayer and liturgical life. In the border region of northern Yeoncheon, it serves as an important point of continuity for Catholics who live at some distance from the parish center.
History & origins
Daegwang-ri Mission Station began on June 4, 1957, under Cheorwon Parish. After the administrative boundary of the area changed from Gangwon Province to Gyeonggi Province in 1963, the mission came under Dongducheon Parish. It was later transferred to Jeongok Parish in 1979 and to Yeoncheon Parish in 1992.
During the Jeongok Parish period, construction of a new mission chapel began in 1989, and the building was blessed that November by Cardinal Stephen Kim Sou-hwan. When Sangri Parish was established in 2003, Daegwang-ri became part of Sangri Parish, where it remains today. Its history is marked by the continuity of a local Catholic community despite repeated changes in parish jurisdiction.
