About this place
Cheonghak Catholic Church is a parish of the Diocese of Uijeongbu at 67 Cheonghak-ro 68beon-gil in Byeollae-myeon, Namyangju. It was established on September 19, 2002, and has the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph as its patronal title. The parish serves Catholics in Cheonghak-ri and the surrounding area through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life.
The community began under Yonghyeon-dong Parish before becoming independent and today identifies itself as Cheonghak Holy Family Parish, placing devotion to the Holy Family at the center of its identity.
History & origins
The Cheonghak community grew under Yonghyeon-dong Parish. A site for a future church was purchased in December 2001, and the first Mass at Cheonghak-ri Mission Station was celebrated on August 25, 2002. The official Yonghyeon history records the separation of Cheonghak on September 18, with 337 households and 981 Catholics transferred to the new community.
The Catholic Church Directory records the formal establishment of Cheonghak Parish on the following day, September 19, 2002. The first mission Mass, separation from the mother parish, and formal establishment are therefore best understood as distinct stages in a rapid sequence.
