About this place
Changhyeon Catholic Church is a parish of District 1 of the Diocese of Uijeongbu at 1171-49 Sure-ro in Hwado-eup, Namyangju. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records its establishment on September 24, 1996, and its patron is St. Paul Chong Ha-sang.
The parish serves Catholics in Changhyeon-ri and the surrounding Hwado area through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and community life. With a Korean martyr as its patron, it forms an important local community that grew out of Maseok Parish.
History & origins
The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records September 24, 1996, as the establishment date of Changhyeon Parish. The official history of its mother parish, Maseok, records October 11, 1996, as the date when Changhyeon was separated with 320 parishioners. The two dates may represent different stages in the canonical establishment and practical transfer of the new parish.
Changhyeon subsequently developed as the local parish for the Changhyeon area of Hwado-eup. Because the official sources preserve both dates, they should not be forced into a single event without additional evidence.
