About this place
The Church of Repentance and Atonement stands at 111 Seongdong-ro in Tanhyeon-myeon, Paju, within the Diocese of Uijeongbu, and is dedicated to Our Lady of Peace. Along with serving its local Catholic community, it has a special mission of prayer and pilgrimage for reconciliation and peace on the Korean Peninsula and is closely linked with the Reconciliation Center on the same site.
The exterior recalls Jinsa-dong Church in Sinuiju, while the interior takes its basic form from the Benedictine abbey church at Tokwon in Hamgyeongnam-do. Works created by artists from both North and South Korea further express the memory of the Church in the North and the hope for reconciliation.
History & origins
Construction began with a groundbreaking Mass and ceremony in April 2006, and the Church of Repentance and Atonement was completed in August 2008. In January 2013, ownership and administration of both the church and the Reconciliation Center were transferred from the Archdiocese of Seoul to the Diocese of Uijeongbu. The church was dedicated to Our Lady of Peace on June 25, 2013.
The separate Reconciliation Center was dedicated on July 4, 2014, and the church was established as a quasi-parish on September 16 of that year. On June 25, 2018, it was proclaimed a pilgrimage site for martyrs of the northern regions, strengthening its mission of reconciliation and remembrance of the Church in North Korea.
