About this place
Byeollae Catholic Church is a parish of District 2 of the Diocese of Uijeongbu, located at 121 Songsan-ro in Namyangju. It was established on August 22, 2013, alongside the development of Byeollae New Town, and has St. Francis of Assisi as its patron. Its pastoral territory includes Byeollae-dong and part of Byeollae-myeon.
As a Catholic community formed in a new urban district, the parish supports local faith life through Mass, the sacraments, catechesis, and activities for different generations. Devotion to St. Francis of Assisi and the task of building a living Catholic community in a new town are central to its present identity.
History & origins
Byeollae Parish was created by the Diocese of Uijeongbu on August 22, 2013, as Byeollae New Town was being developed. Its first pastor, Fr. Martino Kim Seong-gil, arrived in September. Without a church of its own, the new community initially celebrated Mass using facilities at Cheonghak and Toegyewon parishes and at Seonseung military church.
The present parish site was confirmed in July 2014, and the first Mass in the new church was celebrated on January 24, 2015. The parish introduction likewise explains that the community spent about a year using Seonseung Church before establishing a church and education building at the present location. The transition from borrowed worship spaces to a permanent parish church is the central story of Byeollae's early history.
