About this place
Beobwon-ri Catholic Church is a parish of District 8 of the Diocese of Uijeongbu, located at 872-2 Saimdang-ro in Beobwon-eup, Paju. It was established on July 4, 1963, and honors St. Andrew Kim Tae-gon, Korea's first Catholic priest, as its patron. The parish's official introduction identifies Beobwon-eup and Paju-eup as its pastoral territory.
It is one of the older parishes in the northwestern part of the diocese, serving local Catholics through Mass, the sacraments, and catechesis since the 1960s. Historically it cared for the Galgok-ri and Junae mission communities; after Galgok-ri developed into a separate parish, Beobwon-ri continued to serve Junae Mission Station, preserving its role as a link among rural Catholic communities in the region.
History & origins
Beobwon-ri Parish was established on July 4, 1963, after separation from Uijeongbu-dong Parish. The new parish provided a closer pastoral center for Catholics in the rural areas of northern Gyeonggi and became the main parish community for Beobwon-ri and the wider Paju-eup area.
For many years the parish cared for Galgok-ri and Junae mission stations. Galgok-ri, in particular, continued to grow under Beobwon-ri's pastoral care until it was elevated to quasi-parish status in 2018 and later became an independent parish. Junae Mission Station remains under Beobwon-ri. The parish's history therefore reflects not only its own continuity but also the growth of surrounding mission communities into more independent Catholic communities.
