Baekseok-dong Catholic Church is the district-head parish of District 6 of the Diocese of Uijeongbu, located at 25 Gangseok-ro in Ilsandong-gu, Goyang. The Catholic Church Directory in Korea records it as established on February 22, 1994, with the Exaltation of the Holy Cross as its patronal title.
As the district-head parish, it serves local Catholics through Mass, the sacraments, and catechesis while also helping coordinate pastoral life among the parishes of District 6. The parish's official introduction presents the Cross as a sign of the hope of salvation for sinners and treats this patronal devotion as a central part of the community's identity.
History & origins
Baekseok-dong Parish was approved as a new parish on February 22, 1994, after separating from Ilsan Parish. Because this was during the development of Ilsan New Town, the first Mass on March 13 was celebrated in a still-undeveloped setting, and the community later passed through two greenhouse-style temporary churches as it grew.
A permanent church was dedicated on September 12, 1999. When the Diocese of Uijeongbu was created from the Archdiocese of Seoul in 2004, Baekseok-dong became part of the new diocese and later developed into the district-head parish of District 6. Its history is marked by growth from makeshift worship spaces in a new town into a central parish for the district.
