About this place
Baekhak Mission Station is a Catholic mission community at 2 Baekdu 2-gil, Baekhak-myeon, Yeoncheon County, under Jeokseong Parish of the Diocese of Uijeongbu. It lies roughly two kilometers south of the southern boundary of the Demilitarized Zone, and the diocesan introduction emphasizes its location very close to the inter-Korean border.
It is not an independent parish but a local Catholic community without a resident priest, living its liturgical and prayer life under the pastoral care of Jeokseong Parish. In an area deeply marked by the Korean War, the mission has also taken on special meaning as a place of prayer for reconciliation and peace on the Korean Peninsula and as a center of service to local residents.
History & origins
Baekhak Mission Station was established on June 7, 2007, through the efforts of a lay missionary and the formation of a local Catholic community. Because of its location in the border region, it developed not only as a place for periodic Mass but also as a community that remembers those lost in war and prays for peace on the Korean Peninsula.
From February 26, 2010, with diocesan approval and agreement, sisters of the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres were assigned to care for the mission and to undertake home visits, catechesis, education, and other forms of local service. Its history can therefore be understood as the growth of a small border mission into a local center of prayer for peace and community care.
