About this place
Taean Parish belongs to the Seosan district of the Diocese of Daejeon and serves as a center of Catholic life for the Taean area, where the faithful celebrate Mass and the sacraments and continue catechesis and community life. The Directory of the Catholic Church in Korea lists the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary as the parish patron and confirms the presence of the Sisters of St. Paul of Chartres in parish apostolate. The parish website states its direction as a community that “seeks God’s will together and moves toward God together,” clearly expressing the kind of faith life the community seeks to cultivate.
A distinctive feature for visitors is the parish’s own guidance for a “pilgrimage of the main church.” Its website presents the stained glass inside the church and sixty-four saints as elements of this pilgrimage, helping visitors understand the church building not only as a liturgical space but also as a place of prayer and reflection. Taean Parish can therefore be understood both as a parish carrying out ordinary pastoral life and as a place where visitors can remember the saints of the Church in Korea, reflect on their faith, and encounter the Catholic community of the Taean region.
History & origins
The Catholic community in Taean grew out of the Taean mission station under Seosan Parish and was raised to the status of an independent parish on August 4, 1964. According to the Diocese of Daejeon’s record for the parish’s fiftieth anniversary, Fr. James Go Dae-yeon became the first pastor. After the transition from a mission station to an independent parish, the community gradually established its own pastoral base. In 1974 it built a church of about seventy pyeong in floor area, which served for many years as the setting for the parish’s liturgy and communal life.
Changes in the number of faithful and in local pastoral needs also brought changes to the parish’s territory. In 2001 Anmyeondo Parish was separated from Taean Parish and became an independent community. Meanwhile, the church built in 1974 had become old and cramped, and the parish prepared to construct a new one. A groundbreaking ceremony was held in 2004 with Bishop Joseph Kyeong Gap-ryong presiding, followed by several years of construction. In November 2011 the new church was dedicated in a liturgy presided over by Bishop Lazarus You Heung-sik. The project thus represented another stage in a community whose history reached back to the earlier mission station.
On September 21, 2014, a thanksgiving Mass marked the fiftieth anniversary of the parish. Former pastoral priests and council leaders, as well as priests and religious who had come from the parish, were invited to look back together on half a century of history. In preparation for the anniversary, parishioners undertook common prayer, including the Rosary and the handwritten copying of Scripture, and offered the fruits of those efforts during the thanksgiving Mass. A commemorative tree was also planted as a visible remembrance of the years that had passed and of the community’s commitment to the future.
The development from the Taean mission station into an independent parish, the later separation of the Anmyeondo community, and the construction of a new church to replace the aging building together trace the growth and change of Catholic life in Taean. This history is more than a sequence of buildings: it records how local Catholics continued to provide a stable setting for liturgy and communal faith amid changing circumstances.
