Yuljeon-dong Parish is a Catholic parish in the Paldal-Jangan District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon, and the Catholic Directory of Korea identifies it as a central parish of the district. History & origins
The origins of Yuljeon-dong Parish can be traced to a Catholic community that grew around a chapel known as “Yuljeon Small Church” in 1983, before an independent parish existed. As the population and number of Catholics in northern Suwon increased, a closer pastoral center became necessary. In February 1988, Yuljeon-dong Parish was formally established after separating from Jowon-dong Cathedral Parish.
Once independent, the community worked to secure a permanent church. According to the Diocese of Suwon’s record of the parish’s twenty-fifth anniversary, the present new church was dedicated in 1998. Thus, after developing from a chapel-based community into a parish, it took about a decade to establish its own permanent church.
In 2013 the parish celebrated a Mass of thanksgiving for the twenty-fifth anniversary of its establishment and held events recalling former pastors and the history of the community. The commemoration formally marked the journey by which a small chapel community had grown into an established local parish in northern Suwon.
The history of Yuljeon-dong Parish reflects a broader pattern of urban expansion: a new community separated from the wide territory of a cathedral parish, and its pastoral structure and physical space gradually developed from a chapel into a parish church. This early history provides the foundation for its present role as a central parish in the district.
