About this place

Yongsori Mission Station belongs to the Hwaseong District of the First Vicariate of the Diocese of Suwon and is under the pastoral care of Hyangnam Parish. The present community continues the tradition of the old Catholic community known as “Yanggan” in the Yanggam-myeon area of Hwaseong, and the Catholic Directory of Korea lists it as a mission station of Hyangnam Parish.

Although smaller than a parish, its significance goes beyond that of a simple local place of worship. Materials from the Diocese of Suwon explain that the present Yongsori Mission Station inherits the Catholic tradition of the Yanggan area extending back to the period of persecution. It is therefore both a mission station supporting the prayer and community life of local Catholics and a place that carries the memory of an old Catholic village in southern Gyeonggi into the present.

History & origins

The roots of Yongsori Mission Station reach back to the old Catholic village of “Yanggan.” According to materials from the Diocese of Suwon, Yanggan was a pastoral mission field of Father Gustave Mutel from 1883 to 1885, and in 1884 the community had more than one hundred Catholics. The diocesan account also records that during the Byeongin Persecution of 1866, Peter Jo Myeong-o, Peter Hong Gi-hyeon, and Charles Hong Won-yeo from this area were arrested and martyred in Hanyang.

When Gatdeungi, later Wangnim Parish, was established in July 1888, the Yanggan community became one of its mission stations. Father Jacques André, the first pastor of Wangnim, reported that many Catholics in the area were descendants of long-established Catholic families. His successor, Father Joseph Alix, built a hall at Yanggan in the early 1890s to support the faith life of the community.

Although parish jurisdictions and the local environment changed over time, the Catholic tradition of Yanggan did not disappear and continues today in Yongsori Mission Station under Hyangnam Parish. The present name and scale differ from those of the old Catholic village, but there is a clear historical continuity in the way the community preserves the memory of Catholics who endured persecution and of the early mission-station community.
